From time to time we have a fellowship meeting instead of a speaker or business meeting. What goes on is entirely up to the Rotarian on duty that evening.
On January 22nd Gwynn Parry used the evening to "debate" a number of topics pertinent to members of this club, or at least that was the intention! The word debate is possibly too strong a word to describe what went on but , at least, it gives an indication of the activity of the evening.
The first question posed was "Should there be an end to the annual Rotary International theme?" This refers to the fact that each January the international President Elect introduces a theme for his or her year of office starting the following July. This year the theme is "Peace Through Service" and for 2013-14 it will be "Engage Rotary. Change Lives". There are pros and cons of having an annual theme. Many think that it is confusing to have an additional motto to that of "Service Above Self" and say that this describes what Rotarians do perfectly adequately. Others find the annual theme a good hook upon which to hang the Rotary message in a different and fresh way each year. There is no doubt that changing the annual theme brings in a great deal of revenue for Rotary International through the annual sale of ties, badges, scarves polo shirts and so on. What was the result of the "debate' in Denbigh? The vote was even, at least of those who raised their hands!
