The news of the earthquake in Nepal 'struck home' in the Rotary Club. A few years ago we entertained a team of young business people from Nepal and sent a team of local young people,in return for a month, to learn about their country. The team was lead by Rotarian Derek Hall from the St. Ives Rotary Club.
Friendships were made and there was a strong desire to help.
As an immediate response, cash was passed to the Cornwall Rotary District, who could get funds quickly to the Katmandu Rotary Club's bank account.
Very quickly £15,000 was raised in Cornwall and sent to Katmandu for immediate help.
In the longer term, it was organised to raise funds and with the kind help of St. Ives Tesco £1800 was raised, with a further collection on the harbour during the Mayday Celebrations making this up to £2000. This has been passed to the Shelterbox organisation in Helston, to provide help and goods to Nepal.
