The guest speaker at tonight's meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Hannah Marr, a support worker with the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA).
The Society was formed in 1839 and is totally separate from the RSPCA.
Hannah informed members that as Scotland’s animal welfare charity they have been on-hand to protect animals and prevent cruelty for 180 years. Over almost two centuries they have grown to become a national charity which celebrates the strength of the human-animal bond and enriches the lives of animals and people.
The SSPCA aims to champion animal welfare and encourage respect and kindness for animals across all our communities. By educating people, of all ages, about the welfare of animals the Society’s hopes to move forward with its mission to eradicate animal cruelty and create a better future for all of us.
The staff promote the importance of the human/animal bond and the myriad medical, social and psychological advantages gained from animal companionship.
In addition, they bring those who abuse animals to justice and, in their centres, care for, rescue, rehabilitate, release and rehome injured animals of all sorts.
Hannah said that they are Scotland’s animal champions, investigating abuse across Scotland, the SSPCA are proud to be at the forefront of preventing cruelty to animals and, as the only animal charity in the UK recognised as a reporting agency to the Crown Office, their inspectors enforce the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006.
After Hannah answered a number of questions put to her, Past President Paul Begley proposed the vote of thanks.
