President Charles welcomed members to tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw.
Our guest speaker was Bob Stewart from the Lanarkshire Family History Society which is based in Merry Street in Motherwell.
The object of the Society is to advance education, by promoting and encouraging the public study of Family History, Genealogy and Local History in Lanarkshire through meetings, lectures and publications. Bob said that the Society, which was formed in 1991, has had three ‘homes’. Initially, based in Hamilton Reference Library, then moving to Motherwell Heritage Centre, before settling in their current premises in Merry Street, in 2020.
Bob advised that researching ‘Family Trees’ was an activity that was ideal for making progress as and when you have the time.
When getting started, Bob suggested collecting old family papers and photographs that you may have in that shoe box in the attic. Another tip was that you should inform family, relatives and friends that you are starting to compile your family tree and that you are looking for old documents, photographs and information. The older generations, generally, are those who can provide you with the most information. He said that you should prepare a quick chart to give you the big picture of your family and your ancestors, starting with yourself and working back through each generation in turn using Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates as your main search tools.
After Bob answered numerous questions posed by the members, Andrew Steven proposed the vote of thanks.
Willie Talbot reported that there was no winner of the weekly bonus ball so next Saturday would see a five week roll over.
Callan Dick updated members on the Lanarkshire Rotary Clubs’ "Wrap Up" project. Boxes were now available for distribution to the churches, and other venues, and rotas had been set up for Rotarians to help sort out the coats and winter jackets at the resource facility being provided by Hamilton Accies F.C.
