With the President indisposed, Senior Vice President Peter McCrossan took the chair at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw and he introduced our guest speaker, Robert Park, who said he was genuinely, "Living the Dream" as, since November 2018, he has been the Safety and Facilities Manager at Motherwell F.C.
A local man, Robert went to Garrion Academy and has had a lifetime involvement with the Boys Brigade. He is presently Captain of 19th Motherwell which is attached to St Margaret's Church.
Robert retired after 30 years with Strathclyde Police/Police Scotland, ending his career as the inspector in charge of Operations Planning in Greater Glasgow Division, the busiest in Police Scotland.
Prior to being appointed to his dream job at Motherwell F.C., being a life-long supporter, Robert gained experience as match day Deputy Safety Officer at Heart of Midlothian F.C. and at Scotland's National Stadium, Hampden Park.
Robert’s presentation was comprehensive and it was fascinating to discover the many and varied responsibilities involved in the run up to, during and after each match. In addition, the time spent liaising with the various authorities involved in stadium safety.
During the course of his training for his position, Robert has become highly qualified and he is the former Secretary to the Football Safety Officers Association Scotland. He is responsible for coordinating with police, fire and local authority representatives on match days and recently accompanied the Scotland team to Moldova as their safety officer.
After Robert answered a number of questions, James Gibbons proposed the vote of thanks.
Jim Peat reminded members that assistance is required for our Santa's Sleigh which will be out, next week, touring Motherwell (Monday) and Wishaw (Tuesday) and static at the Bellshill & Orbiston Y.M.C.A. (Wednesday).
