Senior Vice-President Peter McCrossan welcomed everyone to the meeting.
Pigeon Derby - Paul Begley reported that the Coalburn Pigeon Club had not participated in last Saturday’s race from Wooler and so there was no report. However, before the racing season had started, there had been several practice races to get the young birds familiar with racing. The final practice race, several weeks ago, was used to identify this week’s winning Rotarians: 1st – Ian St John (12pts); 2nd – Des Donnelly (10pts); 3rd – Hugh Graham (8pts); 4th John McDonald (6pts); 5th – Peter McCrossan (4pts); 6th – Katrina Gibbons (2pts); Booby – Callan Dick (-2pts).
Bonus Ball - Willie Talbot reported that Jean Murray had been the winner 2 weeks ago. Last week had been a roll-over.
Our speaker for this evening was Callan Dick who spoke about ‘The Trumpet’ and his connection with it.
Callan explained how the trumpet works – the early versions without valves and the post 1796 versions which have three valves. Over the years he played the trumpet in a number of bands and orchestras. He took up the trumpet at school and played in the school orchestra and brass ensemble. Glasgow had three schools’ orchestras, a wind band and a brass band and he played in most of them. While at school, he took part in residential courses over the summer. He played in the City Brass band at the Clyde ’76 Festival, the Glasgow Arts Centre orchestra and the Glasgow Symphonic Wind Band in Germany and Iceland.
Callan played videos to demonstrate the range of music covered by trumpet playing – fanfare, lyrical and celebratory/triumphal. He explained the different sounds produced by the trumpet and the cornet.
He spoke about the benefits of being part of an orchestra in terms of developing leadership skills, team-building skills, being aware of other players in the orchestra and of course the sheer pleasure of being totally immersed and collectively performing the music.
After a number of questions were posed by members, S.V.P. Peter thanked Callan for a very informative and entertaining presentation.'What We Do' Main Pages:
