President Charles welcomed everyone to the meeting and, in his Interesting Rotary Information segment, he highlighted the Rotary Foundation.
It was created in 1917 by the 6th President of R.I. to do good in the world. From an initial sum of $20.50 it grew and there is now more than $1 billion in the fund. It is Rotary’s one and only charity and is used to fund programmes and projects. Each year $70 million are given in grants to Rotary Clubs throughout the world for humanitarian projects, training and scholarships.
Donations from Rotary Clubs throughout the world keep the Rotary Foundation thriving.
Willie Talbot reported that the bonus ball winner had been Jim Peat.
Pigeon Derby:
Paul Begley will contact George Pollock this week to ask whether or not he was in a position to run the annual pigeon derby which usually begins at the start of August. If not, President Charles would approach his contact.
Secretary Ian reported that:
All members should now have received the 2021/22 Club Directory, produced and printed by Tom Sleith. Thanks were expressed to Tom for all his work.
The Data Management System had been brought up-to-date in advance of the expected subscription invoice from Rotary GB&I. 26 members and 4 honorary members had been recorded on the system.
Treasurer Tom intimated that this was the start of the new financial year and that all 26 members had paid their subscriptions.
Starting our Summer Speaker Programme for this year was, fairly, new Club member, Jean Murray.
Jean spoke about her career in teaching which began 50 years ago as an uncertificated teacher in Coltness High School. After teacher training at Jordanhill College, she taught languages in Hamilton Grammar School, followed by Claremont High School, before returning to Hamilton Grammar in a promoted post. Further promotion followed to Head of Languages at Cathkin High School, then Depute Head Teacher at a Glasgow school, before being appointed Head Teacher of Shawlands Academy.
Throughout her talk, Jean gave accounts of the challenges she had faced and overcome at each school. She recounted many humorous incidents at the various schools involving the pupils and gave an interesting insight into life as a teacher in schools in West/Central Scotland.
After questions and comments, President Charles thanked Jean for a very interesting and humorous talk.
