Junior Vice President Peter McCrossan welcomed everyone to the meeting. He announced that it would be a “Evening of Social Chat” as the planned speaker, Ellen Wong, had called off due to health reasons. She had been re-scheduled for Thursday 10th June.
In his ‘Interesting Rotary Facts’ presentation, Peter highlighted early Rotary funding. In 1905, the first Rotary Club decided that instead of dues, members would pay $0.50 fines which was about £150 in today’s money. However, in 1915, Rotary International was on the verge of bankruptcy and it was decided that each member would pay dues of $1.00. This stabilised R.I.’s finances and the organisation has never been in financial difficulties again.
In 1911, Paul Harris gave $25 to produce and mail a new publication “The National Rotarian” to all 2000 Rotarians in the 23 Rotary Clubs that existed at that time.
