Charles Keeper welcomed everyone, including the guest speaker, David Kay, to tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw.
In Katrina’s absence, Charles continued with Interesting Rotary Information and highlighted that one of the 20 Notable Rotary Global Grant Projects was ‘Supporting Rotary Family Health Days in Uganda’. The area of focus of this project was saving mothers and children.
The Rotary Club of Kiwatule, Uganda was the host sponsoring club and the international sponsor was District 5500 (Arizona, USA). The total budget allocated for the project was $97,750.
Prior to the project, a health-care summit in Uganda, funded by a district grant, had uncovered a need for improved pre-natal diagnostic capabilities in rural communities and also the need for better nutrition for expectant mothers.
The global grant provided humanitarian supplies for Uganda’s Rotary Family Health Days and a vocational training team for health-care workers at the health camps. The team trained 23 nurses, midwives, and other health-care practitioners to use ultrasound scanning devices to diagnose abnormalities in pregnancies and other life-threatening conditions.
Ten Rotary Clubs in Uganda each adopted a Rural Health-care Centre.
Tonight’s speaker, David Kay, a Rotarian from Leith Rotary Club, was then introduced by Charles. David has been an hotelier since 2004 and owns a 14-bedroom hotel in Edinburgh. During his talk he related numerous stories about the funny, crazy, and interesting situations he had encountered, involving guests, from Scotland and various countries in the world, who had stayed at his hotel.
In proposing our vote of thanks, James Gibbons thanked David for a very entertaining talk.
Willie Talbot reported that the Bonus Ball, including a four week roll-over, had been won by Ian St John.
