There were 24 attendees at last Thursday's" virtual" meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw held under the auspices of Zoom technology.
President Andrew Murray opened the meeting with some items of business before handing over to Willie Talbot, our Foundation convener, who conducted the April Numbers Club draw, his wife Agnes drawing the winning numbers of Rotarians Tom McPherson, Hughes Lumsden and David McLeod. Willie also confirmed that the weekly bonus ball would resume this Saturday with all members confirming they wished to participate.
President Andrew then introduced our guest speaker, Clive Coombes, who said he had spent 37 years in the R.A.F., serving as a helicopter pilot, before moving on to fast jets and ending his career as a military attaché.
He said that it was when he was considering retirement, and what he would do in the future, when he came up with the idea of wedding car hire. Clive found, and subsequently purchased, a business with 3 classic cars based in Rutland.
His affection for his classic cars came through in his presentation. He had even named each one. Lucy, a 1965 Jaguar Mark 2, Rosie, a 1964 Daimler V8 and The Lady, a Jaguar Drop-head Royale. Clive took us through the various aspects of bridal car hire, car problems, wedding pictures, bridal fashions, even the confessions of a chauffeur. He had estimated that the business would breakeven with 20 weddings a year, however, he was much more successful, and, after assisting with 197 weddings in 3 years, Clive sold the business, retired and moved to Edinburgh.
There was a short question and answer session where members were given the opportunity to talk to Clive about his business. The vote of thanks was proposed by Paul Begley and the members responded by showing their appreciation.'What We Do' Main Pages:
