Tonight, the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw held our third "virtual" meeting.
The guest speaker was Chip Ross, a member of the Strathcona Sunrise Rotary Club from Courtney, Vancouver Island in Canada. Chip informed members about the work his club has undertaken in villages, a few miles behind the holiday resort of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where the families of many of the hotel workers stay, living in acute poverty. His club, with the help of one of their members, who Chip explained was press ganged into joining Rotary, identified the need in these villages and so started a project which has been running for approximately ten years. During this time, Chip’s Club has assisted in support for children by supplying books and reading to them, funding an ambulance and school bus and repairing schools and toilets. When asked what the villagers would most like, they answered clean water, and, with the help of a Rotary Global Grant, the Strathcona Sunrise Club was able to supply four villages with clean water, installing filtration and purification equipment, along with a programme of training to allow repair and maintenance by local residents. Over this period a particularly good relationship has developed and is continuing.
There were several questions put to Chip, who responded accordingly, and the vote of thanks was proposed by James Gibbons. In response, Chip invited members to join his Club at one of their virtual meetings, and details will be circulated by Callan Dick.
For this meeting we were joined by Honorary Member, and President of the Inner Wheel Club of Motherwell and Wishaw, Dorothy Arthur, member of the Rotary Club of Carluke, Michael Arthur and member of the Rotary Club of Kilsyth, David Breton, who all expressed their appreciation in taking part.'What We Do' Main Pages:
