The speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Lesley McBride, a volunteer fundraiser with the Kilbryde Hospice.

Lesley began by giving the members a brief history of the Kilbryde Hospice Appeal. This was started, in 2001, by Tony McGuiness and Dr John Richards to help tackle the lack of palliative care beds within South Lanarkshire.

The Hospice was, originally, established in the Red Deer Medical Centre in East Kilbride, offering a limited day care service.

In 2015, the new Kilbryde Hospice building was opened in the grounds of Hairmyres Hospital at a cost of £4 million, initially offering enhanced services built on those given at Red Deer.

In 2018, the Donna Mortimer Ballantine inpatient unit, with 12 beds, was opened and this allows the Hospice to provide a full set of services for those who most need it.

Lesley said that the Hospice provides palliative care, and support, to patients with life limiting illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. In addition to in-patient care, the staff provide day services, care at home and counselling services, all of which are available for the patient’s families, also.

After our usual question and answer session, Jim Robertson proposed the vote of thanks.

Pres. Andrew then presented Lesley with a cheque for our donation of £1,336.00, raised from our recent events.

The monthly Numbers Club Draw was won by Des Donnelly, Jane Allan and Jim Peat.
