Youth was the theme of tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw with a number of secondary pupils in attendance.
Three pupils from St Aidan’s High School, Caleb Duffy, Zac Brown and Alex McCormack, attended to receive the Douglas Clementson Trophy, their prize for winning our Secondary Schools Golf competition held, recently, at Wishaw Golf Club. To win, they overcame teams from Coltness, Dalziel and Our Lady’s High Schools in the competition which was organised by our Sports Convenor, Charles Keeper.
In addition, the three pupils, who were sponsored by the Club to attend RYLA (the Rotary Youth Leadership Award) Week during the summer, came along to give their thoughts and tell of some of their experiences.
The aim of RYLA is to encourage the development of teamwork and leadership skills in young people who have the potential to be future community, professional and business leaders.
The outward bound style course takes place in July in and around the Abernethy Centre at Ardeonaig, overlooking Loch Tay. The location and facilities, along with the staff and mentors, ensure an ideal mix of enjoyable, and memorable, experiences from which the participants derive a great deal of benefit.
Our three Rylarians were Sam Kidd, who attends Our Lady’s High School, and Haydon McAvoy and Leo Muxito, pupils at St Aidan’s High School. Roy Simpson, our Youth Convenor, interviewed the boys, asking them for their individual experiences. All the Rylarians said that, at the beginning, they had not realised what they had let themselves in for, but, by the end of the week, it had been life changing for each of them and, possibly, the best week of their lives.
At the end of the week, all the participants vote for the person who, they consider, over the week, to have developed most and contributed to enjoyment of the others. Leo won this vote and was presented with the John Mair Trophy by Brenda Cochrane, the Assistant District Governor.
Past President Charles Keeper proposed the vote of thanks.'What We Do' Main Pages:
