Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (R.Y.L.A.)

The members of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw are, justifiably, proud of the work of John Mair, our Past President and Past District Governor, in establishing R.Y.L.A. in District 1020.

In recent times, our connection has been maintained by Past President Ian Carrol, who served as R.Y.L.A. Officer for a number of years before handing these reigns on to President James Gibbons.

Recently, Ian, James and Katrina Gibbons have undertaken the role of mentor at the week long events.

On an annual basis, the Club sponsors the attendance of, at least, two young people at the R.Y.L.A. outward bound scheme at Ardeonaig on the banks of the River Tay. (More details in the R.Y.L.A. section of ‘What We Do’).

Young Technologist Competition

Recently, the Club has sponsored a number of teams to take part in the West Area Competition, held in Kilsyth Academy, and Gordon Megahy, our Club Secretary, has been a judge.

Teams of four Design and Technology students, with an interest in engineering and science subjects, are invited to apply to compete in a full day, out of school, event to devise and build a solution to an unseen technical task. As yet, our schools have not returned with and silverware, but, there’s always next year!!

School Golf Competition

Annually, the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw organises a Golf tournament, played under stableford rules, for the Douglas Clementson Trophy. The participating teams are from our local secondary schools and the venue alternates between Colville Park and Wishaw Golf Clubs.

Interact Club

In the near future, we are hoping to establish an Interact Club in one, or more, of our high schools in the Wishaw area – watch this space!!!

Schools Evenings

Annually, our local secondary schools are invited, in rotation, to participate in a number of evenings.

Musical

Our schools are invited to showcase the work of their music departments, the choice of programme being their own. Regularly, we are entertained by very talented young people giving a wide range of vocal and instrumental performances. The pupils are, invariably, accompanied by staff from the schools and we appreciate the time given up by these dedicated professionals.

Public Speaking

Pupils, from one or two of our schools, make speeches on topics of their own choice. In recent times the subjects have ranged from serious and informative to light-hearted and amusing. The members never cease to be impressed by the confidence and expertise of the young people.

Spotlight on…….

On an irregular basis, especially if schools are new to involvement with us (when the Rotary Club of Bellshill folded, we brought their schools under our wing), we invite the Head Teacher to bring along senior pupils to highlight the attributes which make their school special.

Young Achiever of the Year

Each year, at our Gala Dinner, we present an award to our Young Achiever of the Year and we actively seek nominations from all the partners detailed above. Ideally, the successful candidate will be a young person who has overcome difficulties, personal or physical, to become a role-model for his, or her, peers within their school or organisation.

Volunteer Spotlight Evening

Mainly through the youth organisations, we invite young people who volunteer in the community to come to the Club and give an insight into what motivates them and what satisfaction they derive from their volunteering.

One Off Talks

When we learn of young members of our community who have done something out of the ordinary, we encourage them to come to the Club and tell us about it. Recently, we have been told of polar expeditions, participation in a ‘tall ships’ race, volunteering in Africa and many more. Our young people are impressive!
