The President visits the Salvation Army HQ in Southport
On Friday 3rd March, President Phil Holloway, John Bambery and Nick Philpott visited The Southport branch of the Salvation Army to present a cheque for £630 on behalf of the Club to Kathryn Casserley, the manager. 50% of the donation for the SA's Baby Bank and 50% for their Energy Top Up Scheme. The impressive modern building is on Shakespeare Street, and is the centre for SA activity in the town.
It has a number of functions, as well as the Worship Hall. The primary downstairs space is a café which also acts as a “no pressure” Warm Space for visitors with home-energy issues to thaw out. This is run by volunteers. The Tiny Miracles Baby and Toddler Bank has changes of clothes, nappies etc and formula milk available for mums who are in need. The Salvation Army works closely with the Compassion Act food banks, and is a hub for collection of goods. There are various other rooms available for rental by children’s groups etc, including a very safe outdoor area of astroturf on the first floor, which has a high barrier and is not overlooked.
There is obviously a lot of good community work going on, as well as traditional Salvation Army worship and church life.
