Bury Clubs Purple Weekend

Purple4Polio Event


PURPLE WEEKEND  -  18/19TH MARCH 2017  -  BURY

Objective -

  1. To raise awareness of the campaign Eradicate Polio now.

  2. To raise funds for the above campaign

  3. To raise awareness fo Rotary in the Bury area.

  4. To have a fun day for all the family

Method -

Parade -  A parade of school children plus various bands is to take place on Saturday morning 18th March 2017

The parade will assemble at the Drill Hall in Bury at 10.00am

The parade will move off at approximately 11.00am

The route will be from the drill hall, past the cenotaph, down towards the Rock, up central street to St John's square, turn left past the gardens and left again heading back to the Rock and then onwards back to the drill hall.

It is anticipated this parade will take no longer than 1 hour, returning to the drill hall by 12.00 noon.  Some roads will need to be closed temporarily for safety.

Along the route there will be stewards to ensure safety of both the public and those taking part in the parade.  It is anticipated that the stewards will number 30

There will be a medical team on hand in the case of accidents etc.

There will be donation collectors alongside the parade and the number is estimated at 10

There will also be a VIP gazebo where the Lord Lieutenant of Manchester, The Mayor of Bury and other dignitaries will acknowledge the parade participants.



Concert -

Saturday 18th March 2017

There will be a concert in the Millgate Centre (Schorndorf Square) from 12.30pm onwards.  It is anticipated this will end by 4.00pm

The Band of the Royal Fusiliers will take part as will the Radcliffe Training Band. Other acts may also be available.

There will be 2 stalls in the Millgate with information re the Eradication of Polio, together with some badges for sale.  There will also be information regarding Rotary in the Bury Metro Area.

Collectors will be at each of the entrances to the Millgate to receive donations

Sunday 19th March 2017

There will be another concert in the Schorndorf Square from 12.00pm on wards. Once again it is anticipated this will end by 4.00pm

Bury Music centre will be providing the various acts

There will be 2 stalls in the Millgate with information re the Eradication of Polio, together with some badges for sale.  There will also be information regarding Rotary in the Bury Metro Area.

Collectors will be at each of the entrances to the Millgate to receive donations

Other events

  1. The 4 clubs in the metro area are planning 4 fund raising events in pubs, restaurants etc  - total 0f 12 events in total.

  2. A fund raising concert is being planned for late February.

  3. Letters are being sent out to major businesses in early January seeking sponsors for this week end

  4. It is hoped to get a radio station - eg KEY103 - to come on board over the week end and promote donations via text giving.

  5. A website - called Purple4polio.org is being set up to encourage donations and to give information regarding the campaign.

  6. It is hoped to flood light major public buildings in Bury in purple light.

  7. Proposal are being drawn up to provide entertainment for younger children - eg face painting, etc
