The Rotary Club of Thame (England) - District 1090 (Thames Valley) - and Rotary Club of Blumenau Oeste (Brazil) - District 4650 - raised funds towards APAE towards the purchase and installation of solar heating for their swimming pool.
What is APAE?
APAE stands for – “Parents and Teachers Association of the students with Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities”.
APAE is a non-governmental and non- profit organization based in Brazil, that is attended by 410 students with Intellectual and Physical Disabilities.
APAE offers the following services: Social, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Medical, Nutrition and Dietetics, Dental treatment, Schooling and Psychological and Occupational Therapy.
Short History of the Link between Thame and Blumenau Oeste Rotary Clubs
In 1992 Cristiane de Moreas was an Rotary Academic Scholar from Brazil studying town planning at Oxford Brookes University, with Hubert Dudley of Thame RC as her Counsellor. When she returned she joined the Rotary Club of Blumenau Oeste who had proposed her for the scholarship. The two Rotary Clubs started a combined project to raise funds for the conference hall for APAE. In 1998 Hubert Dudley, Charles Gibbons and Ross Dike, representing Rotary Club of Thame traveled to Blumenau to present the grant, which included a matching grant from Rotary International. In 2013 Rotary Club of Thame started another combined project to raise funds for APAE, towards solar heating for their swimming pool which was completed in September 2015.
