Family Fun in the Spring sunshine raises £3,000 for charity

Maidenhead Thames Bunny Fun Run 2015

Over 200 people wearing 'black & white' rabbit ears, bow ties and fluffy tails joined in for Maidenhead’s fourth annual Bunny Fun Run on Sunday 22 March 2015.

It was the fourth year of the Bunny Fun Run, organised by Maidenhead Thames Rotary Club, and sponsored by Shanly Foundation. The event attracted runners from across Berkshire and beyond to take on the 5 Km course starting and finishing at Oaken Grove Park, off Courthouse Road.

Over 25% of the participants ran as a family, with a third of the runners being children between the ages of 6 and 18. So, it certainly was a happy family affair!

Trophies were awarded to the fastest male, female, Senior Citizen, Under 18 and  Under 12 runners, and this year another category of winners was introduced, namely the fastest wheelchair para athlete racer. These were presented by Paralympian gold medallist rower Naomi Riches MBE, RBWM Mayor Richard Kellaway and Mayoress Mrs. Mary-Lou Kellaway,  and Rotary District Governor Tim Cowling.  A special trophy was also awarded to the 'fanciest' bunny runners!

A quarter of the runners live in the vicinity of the route, two thirds of them from Maidenhead, the remainder from the surrounding areas, and as far afield as London and Reading.

Rotarian Roddy Benson of Faringdon, wearing a full white bunny outfit, ran on behalf of the District Governor for Seesaw charity who provide grief support for children and young people in Oxfordshire.

More than £3,000 is expected to be raised. The money raised will be split between charities supported by Rotary and those nominated by the runners, with a proportion  donated to Alexander Devine Children's Hospice Services.

Feedback from the runners and some residents has been fantastic, and many felt it was a very happy community event blessed by good sunny weather, and entertained by Bunny Mascots along the way.
