Black Prince Cycle Ride

Thu, Jul 11th 2013 at 12:00 am - 12:00 am

On Saturday 8th June, 33 bikers cycled from Princes Risborough to Woodstock endeavouring to raise funds on behalf of the Princes Day Centre. The day was fine, the stops highly recommended, and the return journey uneventful. Everybody completed the ride and reported back having enjoyed the experience.

The following day, six "nutters" cycled all the way to Canterbury Cathedral from Princes Risborough to complete the 'from birth to burial' of the Black Prince, who histrorically is closely related to the town.

Not such a great day with the wind in our faces most of the journey. The team started at 5.00am travelling through High Wycombe and on to London via the A40, cross Vauxhall Bridge and after a combination of A roads arrived in Canterbury by 4.00pm. Perhaps a little later than planned, but who's counting!

After a very welcome shower, courtesy of the local Leisure Centre to freshen up, and through the Rotary Club of Canterbury, a private visit had been arranged at the Cathedral, with the Archdeacon as guide, to the tomb of the Black Prince and the crypt below.

Afterwards, whilst we could still walk, the cyclists enjoyed a welcome drink and a splendid meal in the Parrot pub in Canterbury with our support crew who had kept us well provisioned on the journey and screamed words of encouragement as we cycled. At least we think it was encouragement!

Princes Risborough Rotary club wish to thank all who participated over the weekend to make a very worthwhile contribution to the Princes Day Centre.  More than £9,000 was donated.
