Run Rabbits, Run!

Maidenhead's First Bunny Fun Run - in the rain!

Keeping dry...winner Joseph Chang with DG Niall BlairSunday, 4 March 2012 was a remarkable day for two reasons. Firstly it was the only wet day for weeks and it did not rain again for weeks after the event. The second reason was it saw the first Maidenhead Bunny Fun Run, organised by the Rotary Club of Maidenhead Thames as a charity fundraising activity and also, hopefully, for the entertainment of the fun runners.

Some 150 runners had signed up and a vast majority, around 140, actually turned up in the pouring rain and completed the 5K course which was based around Oaken Grove Park and followed a figure of eight on the roads in that part of West Maidenhead, starting and finishing in the Park. Every shape, size and age of runner took part from a number of under tens to Peter Addis, an 87-year-old gentleman who won a prize as the fastest [and probably the oldest!] OAP.

In keeping with the name of the event, each runner was equipped with a pair of large pink rabbit ears, a suitably inscribed T-shirt and a white fluffy tail. The sight of these jogging past in pouring rain on a Sunday morning must have come as a surprise to some of the local residents.

The course was well marshalled by Rotarians and their partners with short-term road closures where necessary to keep the runners safe. Every finisher received a medal and apart from Mr Addis other prize winners included Abbie Jones, the fastest under 12 entrant. Abbie  finished 7th and took just 23.04 minutes This was an impressive feat as she was faster than the quickest under 18  runner, Thomas Brockwell who finished 8th overall in  23 min 34 seconds. First prize went to Joseph Chang [20.19 min], the fastest male runner.

The Second Bunny Fun Run is planned for 3rd March 2013 and hopefully it will be a warm dry day!
