Youth Speaks.

 

On the 3rd of October 2011 the Annual Youth Speaks Competition of The Rotary Club of Kirkcudbright, was held at Kirkcudbright Academy. The senior school competing for the Jim Scott Memorial Trophy and the junior school for the Maurice Halliday Q.

The judges Liz Howell Anne Halliday and James Bell commented that the standard was incredibly high.

Twenty four entrants from the junior school with six qualifying for the final. In the senior school the six finalists were all boys, first time no girls have made the final.

The junior finalists and subjects were Rory Grieve, Winston Churchhill; Zak Holland, The Olympics; Laura Campbell, Alexander McQueen; James Hannay, Butterfly Quest; Marcus Austin-Baird, The Internet; Iona Bonaventura, The Most Prolific Consumer Device on the Planet.

The senior school were equally diverse. William Lowe, A Question of Identity; Robin Lloyd, Great Expectations; Iain McLeod, The Real Reason; Andrew Sanderson, Illegal Music Downloads; Jack Nurse, The Play's the Thing; Scott Paton, Addiction or Simply Fun?

Each contestant had a set length of time, Juniors 3 to 5 minutes and Seniors 5 to 7 minutes.

The judging criteria ranged from interest, relevance, structure, audience engagement, expression, fluency, audibility, pace and length.

Anne Halliday gave the judges critic in her summing up. She commented on the standard of talks surpassing all expectations and gave each contestant feed-back from the judges. Tony Wood MC for the evening rounded the evening off with an all encompassing vote of thanks.

Junior winners. 1st Iona Bonaventura, 2nd Laura Campbell, 3rd Marcus Austin-Baird.

Senior winners. 1st Scott Paton, 2nd Robin Lloyd, 3rd Jack Nurse, most promising overall> William Lowe.
