Linda Noble & Laura Hurren – RotaKids, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Linda, President of the Rotary Club of Falkirk and their RotaKids convenor, and Laura Hurren, lead teacher from Hallglen Primary School, will explain the highlights, and lowlights, of setting up a RotaKids Club

Tonight, the members of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw welcomed our speakers, Linda Noble, President and Rotakid Leader of Falkirk Rotary Club and Laura Hurren, P6 teacher at Hallglen Primary School, together with a number of staff members at some of our local primary schools.
Both Linda and Laura have years of experience operating a Rotakids Club and they were the ideal team to promote Rotakids to our other guests.
Linda said that RotaKids is a fun and exciting way for children aged 7-12 to make friends and get involved with important activities in the community, all while having a great time in the process.
RotaKids Clubs are based in schools, youth groups or community centres and with the help and support from teachers, youth leaders and the local Rotary club, children can gain a valuable experience in helping others and learning interesting, new things.
The Clubs also bring an exciting and practical approach to supporting the citizenship element of the national curriculum. Linda emphasised that everything in RotaKids is children led, with light touch support from the adults, allowing them enjoy a boost to their confidence and self-esteem at a key age and develop and understanding of how their actions can impact on others. The great thing about RotaKids is that children can come up with ideas and see them become a reality. The groups can do just about anything which springs to mind to help others. It shows children that, by working together, there is so much you can achieve.
Linda and Laura gave examples of RotaKids activities which included filling shoeboxes with toys for underprivileged children around the world as part of the Rotary Shoebox Scheme, raising money for charities in their area with sponsored events, e.g. bike ride and swimathon, non-uniform day, cake sale or school fun days, supporting the environment by setting a nature project in the school playground or local community and collecting books for children in countries around the world.
Laura became involved with Rotakids in 2019 when a new head teacher arrived at Hallglen Primary School and asked Laura to liaise with Falkirk Rotary Club re the possibility of setting up a club in her school. Laura then gave a comprehensive presentation of what had developed over the last five years, highlighting the events mentioned above. It was clear from the slides just how much her pupils enjoyed being involved in RotaKids.
