St. Andrews Night

Fri, Dec 1st 2023 at 6:30 pm - 9:45 pm

Hosted by Pres. Callan, members, partners and friends will enjoy an evening of fellowship, good food and Scottish themed entertainment
Host: Des Donnelly
VoT: Jane Allan

Tonight, the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw celebrated St Andrews Night with a dinner in the Bentley Hotel.

The dinner was hosted by Senior Vice President James Gibbons as President Callan Dick was unable to attend.

Unfortunately, the musical entertainers had to call due to a covid infection, however our guest speaker was excellent.

Rian Matsui, a Rotary Global Grant Student, who comes from Japan, is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Comparative Education and International Development, at the University of Edinburgh.

She told the members and guests that, back in Japan, she works with refugees, immigrants and ethnic minorities through volunteering in Non-Governmental Organisations whilst working as research assistant and member of her university's refugee support group.

She has witnessed so many incredible people with strong passions and amazing skills who had been left feeling powerless just because of their background and status in society. Rian hopes to work in education to see what roles there are for empowering people, as well as identifying measures to ensure that ethnic minorities and refugees are able to utilise their background and experience and become an important part of any society.

When answering questions put to her about what she would bring from Japan to Scotland and vice versa she said from Japan she would bring the very punctual national rail system and from Scotland she would take back the "people" of Scotland.

Past President Jane Allan proposed a comprehensive vote of thanks.
