The guest speaker at this evening's meeting of the Rotary Club was, our own, Past President Hugh Graham.
Hugh worked within the Health Service as a Biomedical Scientist in Haematology and Blood Transfusions, and, in those years, he wrote a number of research papers and scientific articles all involving Blood Banking, resulting in him being an invited speaker at numerous conferences and involving him in the teaching of this discipline.
He later started his own company, manufacturing antibodies and reagents used by Blood Transfusion and Transplant laboratories.
Now retired, Hugh is an author and his talk was on his new book entitled Bloody Blood Groups. He asked members if they had ever wondered about their blood groups and what it might mean? If so, his new book was for them! If you open it up and rummage around the facts and arguments to find what is relevant - you might be surprised at what you find!
Blood groups have been associated with a genetic predisposition to disease, intelligence, personality, ability, psychopathy and physical attributes. All these are discussed in Hugh’s book, with some of the reported, unfounded, nonsense separated from proven scientific conclusions. The book simplifies explanations, but entertains, with its tales all written in a humorous style.
The book also tells of Hugh's working life, interspersed between the description of facts and tales surrounding the ideas around blood groups.
But what is a blood group? And where is it found? Answering these questions, Hugh also brings to life some of the bizarre conclusions and assumptions earlier investigations have claimed. He said that if you are especially intelligent as a consequence of your blood type, or, are you particularly handsome, or good looking, as a consequence of it? The A, B, O and Rhesus groups are explored as are the uncommon and really rare blood groups.
Hugh then answered a number of questions from members and Andrew Steven proposed the vote of thanks.
