Disability Games District 1070

Sun, Apr 7th 2024 at 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Venue Ratcliffe College

District Disability Games took place at Ratcliffe College on Sunday April 7th 2024.

Events:

  • Swimming
  • Archery - cancelled due to windy conditions....
  • Basketball Hoop Shooting
  • Weightlifting
  • New Age Kurling
  • Boccia
  • Table Tennis
  • Darts
  • Wheelchair Slalom
  • Wheelchair racing

Events were categorised into junior and senior (16 + on day of games), and by gender in some cases, whilst some are open.

Chris thanked everyone for their input which helped make the event a success. and reported 115 competitors (13 teams) took part with winners receiving a cup and each competitor a medal. Lunch goodie bags, a water bottle and bottle of water ensured everyone was fed and watered. Sadly, the archery had to be cancelled due to the high winds despite a location change. The disappointed competitors were able to join in with other sports. AG, Richard, was very complimentary about LDM in his closing speech and particularly mentioning Chris who had done an immense amount of work for the games, both before and during. Robin related our involvement with the wheelchair races and congratulated Libby on the work done prior to and during the races. There is some suggestion that the Leicester area clubs should run the games for 3 years rather than the 2 previously agreed. David told of a special moment when a competitor, on receiving a medal, wrapped their arms around him in obvious joy. Several competitors said how much they had enjoyed the event.

Chris shared the following message received from a parent:

“I was there with my son - we were late getting there but were part of the Sunny Skies/Welly’s Group. The whole event was brilliantly put together, from the initial directions, to staff on the gate to free lunch/t shirt/water bottle and medal at the end. All the sporting events were pitched perfectly and so well organised. My son took part in Boccia (got as far as the semi-final), Basketball, Weightlifting, Curling and managed 2 bulls eyes at Darts! We’ve had a fabulous day and thank you and all your members for making it happen!”
