37 Club Members had a hearty meal before considering the Council proposal that the 3rd Monday Meeting of the Club be dropped. This is the first part of an ongoing review of how to make the Club more attractive to new younger members.
Kathryn started the proceedings by asking Gavin Brown, one of the five members' Club Sub-Committee reviewing the future of the Club, to update Members on his findings among young potential Club members. Gavin's findings concentrated on the major concern by potential new members, which was the time commitment involved in joining a membership organisation like Rotary. Additionally, the cost of attending was also a worry, as it was determined by the number of meetings attended.
Kathryn then opened up the meeting for discussion on the specific issue of the number of meetings and also on the broader issue of the future of the Club.
There was a general acknowledgment that the current Club membership is ageing and that the future should be in the hands of the current younger members and new members still to be recruited. There was a long debate at which many members spoke, and then the proposal was put to the vote. The proposal was: 'To drop the third weekly meeting of the Club with the resulting format -
1st week - Breakfast Meeting
2nd week - Monday: Traditional format -Speaker or Business Meeting
3rd week - No meeting.
4th week - Monday: primarily social/ out meeting
5th week - Monday : inclusive meeting that will appeal to all.
The proposal was carried - 24 votes For, 10 votes against, 3 Abstentions. The new policy will commence on March 1st 2020.
