Armbands to Ironman (Fast track!)

Felixstowe Rotarian Shaun Good has just completed his first full Ironman triathlon. That’s a 3.8 km open water swim, 180 km bike ride and a 42.2 km marathon.

Shaun’s achievement is all the more amazing since, although a seasoned runner, he was until recently a non-swimmer. Some fifty years ago, a childhood experience of near drowning left him with a fear of water and it was only last year that he started to take lessons. So, it was as a novice swimmer that he signed up for the Copenhagen Ironman.  As Shaun puts it, the only thing he could think of doing to motivate his swimming was to enter a long distance Ironman event.

So there was no going back and he was into training: typically 9-13hrs per week, consisting of 2-3hrs of swimming, 4-6hrs of biking and 3-4hrs of running, along with strength conditioning and a  weekly Pilates class.

Shaun completed the Copenhagen Ironman on 18th August and crossed the finish line in 13hrs 52mins.
