On a pleasant summer’s evening in August, a group of Rotarians and friends descended on Market Square to paint the bench seats around the war memorial.

The biggest task was weeding under the benches – something which hadn’t been done for a few years – and then the rubbing down and application of paint and varnish.

Our work did not go unnoticed with the public: at least five people came to say how well the pristine, freshly painted seats looked.

Half an hour after finishing the painting the heavens opened to a heavy rainstorm but, fortunately, no damage was done!

One week later we returned to complete some unfinished work, refurbishing the bench seats near St Mary’s Church and the Literary Institution.

Thanks go to Rotarians, John Scarrott, Eric Cowcill, Tim Walmsley, Stuart Blackwell, Caroline Wilkie, and her friends Timothy Southern and Courtney Rawson.
