Rotary Club adopts Llantwit Major Railway Station

The Club has adopted Llantwit Major railway station so that it can review the facilities on a regular basis

The Club, in consultation with the rail operator Transport for Wales, has adopted the local railway station on behalf of the town.  The original station was opened in 1897 but closed for most passengers in 1964 – the one exception occurred in 1965 when the royal train carrying the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh stopped there for them to visit Atlantic College.  The line remained open for freight and through traffic, and in 2005 the expansion of the town led to the rebuilding and reopening of the station to passengers. Since then the number of people using the station has steadily increased, and so have the frequency of trains.

Club member Jeff Robinson reports that, following a meeting with managers from Transport for Wales, members will now monitor the station every week to review its facilities.  Their checklist will include lighting, waiting areas, seating, signage, litter bins, shelters, information screens and graffiti.  The data they gather will be sent to Transport for Wales to action where necessary.  Club President Anthony Pugh said that it was his experience that any problems identified by the club will be acted upon promptly by the provider.  He added that the station has become an integral transportation link for the people of Llantwit Major, and that the Rotary Club was pleased to help maintain this important local asset to a very high standard for the benefit of its many users.
