Supported by our club, Lions Youth Brass held their End of Tour Concert on 25th Julythumbnail view
End of Tour Concert
The average temperature in the school hall at Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College on 25th July was about 30 degrees. Yet members of Lions Youth Band, and theirDirector of Music Nigel Birch, managed to give another bravura end-of-tour concert starting at 7 pm and ending at 10 pm.
The band had just returned from a tour in North Wales giving concerts at a number of venues including Bodnant, Bangor and Llandudno.
As always, pieces by the full band were interspersed with solo items. There were also, being the last concert of the year before the summer break, lots of thanks to be made and lots of certificates to be handed out. This year there was some sadness because Brian Stubbs, who had given great support to the band, particularly on the tours, died some weeks earlier. Brian was well known for his own percussion section when he went around waking up the band members with a collection of saucepans and cutlery. In his honour his wife, Jane, made a “Morning campers!” award to the band member who had given outstanding help on the tour.
As always, the final piece was “Can Can” played, as usual, wearing big, silly hats – Nigel included – but in addition, with the temperature still in the high twenties, an energetic dance routine. Where do they get the stamina?
The proceeds from the concert will be used for the club’s big project this year – a meal-packing event for the charity “Rise Against Hunger”.
