The Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw celebrated a McGonagall Evening, tonight.
William Topaz McGonagall was born in Edinburgh, of Irish parentage. In 1877, he discovered he was a poet and he has been widely acclaimed as the worst poet in British history. Of the 200, or so, poems that he wrote the most famous was, probably, The Tay Bridge Disaster.
The evening, as always was celebrated, back to front, with the Heidyin, President Andrew Murray, giving the final toast, followed by Past President Hugh Graham proposing a, very humorous, vote of thanks.
We then had the “Combing In” of the Stovies, followed by the Address to the Stovies, performed by Des Donnelly.
After a hearty meal, coffee and mints, dessert, main course and starter (consumed in that order), Andrew Steven proposed the “Immoral Mammary”, followed by Tom McPherson who recited McGonagall’s “Farewell Address”, given when he departed Dundee for the long journey to Edinburgh.
Musical entertainment was provided by the, very talented, Cameron Hill who played the keyboard, very badly, brilliantly!!! A great skill, indeed!
The evening continued with Peter McCrossan spoking about the Demon Drink, and Andrew Murray making a Plea to Consumer Affairs.
The festivities were brought to a close by the Heidyin, President Andrew Murray, warmly welcoming the company to the Bentley Hotel and hoping that everyone will have an enjoyable evening.
As usual, the evening was a great success, enjoyed by all.
