Club helps out locally in atrocious conditions to clean up a local beach.

It was a typical summer's day in Britain - a howling gale and horizontal rain (flaming June indeed!).

This however didn't deter members from the Rotary Club of Furness from cleaning the beaches around Roa Island and Foulney Island. They were joined by friends and willing helpers from Rampside village. All were dressed appropriately in waterproofs!

Their task was to scour the beach and nearby areas and collect rubbish that had accumulated, as part of the Rotary National Beach and River Cleaning Day. The local council kindly provided bags and litter pickers.

The event was planned to last all day but had to be called off after two hours due to deteriorating weather conditions. It was then left to event organiser Peter Garwood to pile the couple of dozen bags of rubbish into a small mountain for collection by Council operatives.

Club President Colin Scraggs said despite the weather the event had helped the local environment and praised all those involved. "It once again shows the benefits that Rotary brings to our area."
