Joint 10 Rotary Technology Tournament 2019

Nineteen teams took part, each team comprising four students. A further team made up of the teachers who accompanied the Key Stage 5 students, also took part. This “Joint 10” event was organised for the first time this year by the Rotary Club of Normanton led by PP David Piggin. Howard Rayner from Harrogate Brigantes once again led the team of judges which included Richard Galliford, President of the Rotary Club of Stainborough and Karl Rigg the UK Service Manager of SEW-Eurodrive Ltd, who generously sponsored the event. Mark Holmes, the Managing Director of the company, presented the Rotary trophies to the winning teams in each category and they also received a £50 cheque made out in favour of their respective schools. Each student was presented with a Rotary certificate produced by AG Mark Lovett and will receive in due course, a Crest Award, issued by the British Science Association.

The task this year was the switching on and off of a beacon to meet specific requirements. There were three categories, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. The complexity of the task varied for each category. Each team is given an appropriate pack of materials, the students providing their own hand and power tools. The teams are judged on many aspects. They are encouraged to thoroughly discuss the means by which they can achieve their objective and to document their approach to the task, produce sketches to illustrate important aspects of the construction and the mechanisms which they intend to adopt, as well as the actual construction required to meet the task requirements.

The results of the tournament were as follows:- Foundation.   Joint winners this year ;- CROFTON TEAM 2 and KETTLETHORPE TEAM 1  , 3rd FREESTON. Intermediate. 1st  QEGS/WGHS Team1, 2nd QEGS/WGHS Team2, 3rd ACKWORTH. Advanced. 1st ACKWORTH.

(QEGS/WGHS are joint teams from QEGS - Queen Elizabeth Grammar School and WGHS – Wakefield Girls High School).
