Local schools put to the test by Systems and EDF Energy

The annual Rotary International / Systems / EDF Energy Technology Tournament, took place on Friday March 15th 2019 at The Hollins Technology College, Accrington.

Our regional competitions take place, on the same day across Lancashire and Cumbria.

The local Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley event took place at The Hollins Technology College, Accrington, with 9 schools participating.

96 students made up 24 teams plus teams of Teachers.

This year’s challenge:

The three sections, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, had different parameters to work with around the same basic problem.

The challenging brief was to design and build a wheeled device, to move along a track and pick up a container with a magnetic hook, Take the container back along the track and place it down. In addition, the Intermediate teams have to pass under a low bridge on each journey there and back. Advanced teams have the bridge a little closer to the container, and have to place the container onto a target, then release the magnetic hook to complete the task.

The children enjoyed a great day, not to mention the teachers, putting different ideas forward, using wood, glue, wire, string and an electric motor.

All while developing team work skills, meeting deadlines, planning, design, build and performance skills, as well as getting to know children from other schools.

The results were:

Foundation section:
