On Thursday 4th April 2019 President Anne Sampson, welcomed 17 Cub Rotarians and former member Rotarian John Ferris to this lunch time meeting held in the Gilvenbank Hotel, Glenrothes.
On reception were Geoff Sampson and Roy Francey.
Our speaker armed with a photographic presentation this week was our own Jack Dempsey. He spoke about a Trek he went on in 1992 with 14 others organised by his company Saudi Aramco to Mount Kilimanjaro or just Kilimanjaro with its three volcanic cones, "Kibo", "Mawenzi", and "Shira", which is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa, with its summit about 4,900 metres (16,100 ft) from its base, and 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level. The mountain which is part of Kilimanjaro National Park is a major climbing destination. The mountain has been the subject of many scientific studies because of its shrinking glaciers and disappearing ice fields. His trip took in the Machame route, allowing gradual acclimatisation to the altitude and an excellent chance of reaching the summit. They passed through thick forest, moorland and scree en route to Uhuru Peak, the highest point, which is a challenging trek at altitude, climbing one of the most impressive mountains in the world.
Congratulations to Jack and his team who after a gruelling week of debilitating altitude sickness, severe weather changes and basic camping conditions, the heroic team reached the highest point in all of Africa. To get to the top they had to leave at 11pm and walk and climb for arrival at Gilman’s Point for 6am all made worthwhile where the sunrise was spectacular.
The Rotary Vote of thanks was given by Ewen Macdonald
