Lunch time meeting - Our speaker this week will be Liddy Laird speaking about the Uphill Trust, supporting Women and Children in Uganda

Thu, Mar 7th 2019 at 12:55 pm - 2:10 pm

On Thursday 7th March 2019 President Anne Sampson, welcomed 16 Cub Rotarians and Guest speaker Liddy Laird to this this lunch time meeting held in the Gilvenbank Hotel, Glenrothes.

On reception were Geoff Sampson and May Ford.

President Anne welcomed new Rotarian Kenny Crichton to this his first lunch time meeting after his induction.

Our guest speaker this week was Liddy Laird who gave us a talk on The Uphill Trust which is a small Scottish charity founded in January 2015 to support the development of Uphill Junior School in Uganda. The Chairman of The Uphill Trust, Niall “Max” Macdonald, got to know the founders of the school whilst rediscovering his roots in the west of Uganda (his father had served with the Ugandan Police before Independence).

Why Uphill Junior School? Max visited the nascent school in October 2013 and was inspired by the children he met there and by the vision of the School Director and the struggle that he faced developing an educational facility on a small unimproved plot of rented land with very little funding. He resolved to do “something”, thinking initially that he might be able to find enough money to provide corrugated iron sheets for the roofless classrooms. Personal donations were made by members of the Macdonald family following this visit and a roof duly appeared. By the time Max took his wife Belinda to visit the school in October 2014, both regular and lump sum contributions were being made by family members, well-wishers and community groups in the UK to provide a water collection tank and equipment for the school. At this point the decision was made to set up The Uphill Trust which allowed them to formalise and extend the fundraising needed to help this excellent little school deliver reliable, high quality education to the children in this remote rural location. Their mission is to secure the establishment and development of Uphill Junior School, a privately-owned Primary School with Kindergarten in rural western Uganda. With financial help from The Uphill Trust, the Uphill Junior School Management Committee can maintain a staff of motivated and well-qualified teachers and permanent school buildings are under development. The Uphill Trust is a zero overheads charity that makes no deductions for administration, governance or trustee visits to Uganda.  All the money raised is used to support projects at the school with the mission to produce capable and hardworking children with skills to become productive Ugandans. Their vision to transform society through providing quality education. With an aim to provide quality education to all children in rural communities who have no access to both material and financial support. To strengthen the education sector of Uganda by providing an all-round education to Ugandan children that caters for mental, psychological, physical, emotional and moral values. To promote the education of girls as well as advocating gender equality for the rural children of Uganda.

To provide free education and material support to all children with special needs, children with disability and children born with HIV or affected by HIV/aids in Uganda.

The Rotary Vote of thanks was given by Wilna Roger.
