On reception, this week were Ewen Macdonald who said grace and Geoff Sampson.

7 apologies for absence were received

President Anne Sampson advised that members had been given the 21 days’ notice and that the decision had been taken with a show of hands that the formality of toasting the Queen and Rotary would seize.

Archie Lawrie advised that the young chef competition in Dundee went well and our representative Alisha Aitken from Auchmuty High School although not in the first two was highly commended.

Iain Oates confirmed that the Shelter box would be situated in Lyon Square in the Kingdom Centre Glenrothes over the weekend 15-17th February.

Wilna Roger advised that the Young Photographer competition would be judged on Wednesday 6th February and the Young Musician competition would take place at Auchmuty High School on Thursday 7th February 2019.

Our speaker this week was John Kerr District 1010 coordinator for Shelter box, the disaster relief charity which provides emergency shelter and vital supplies to support people hit by disaster and humanitarian crises around the world. It distributes items such as a tent, cooking utensils, mosquito nets and water purification equipment to people who have lost their belongings. Shelterbox claims to have responded to more than 270 disasters and humanitarian crises in dozens of countries. ShelterBox is made up of people who believe in shelter as a human right – that shelter from the chaos of disaster and conflict is vital.

When people are plunged into crisis, normality is suspended. But good, quality shelter can cut through the chaos. Therefore they provide the tools that enable people to rebuild homes and transform their lives. They do things differently. They started life as a small organisation in Helston, West Cornwall in the UK and have grown to make a big impact across the world with fund raising and units in about 20 different countries. They put families first. The commitment of their supporters enables them to provide emergency shelter and tools for families robbed of their homes by conflict and natural disaster. They don’t believe that one size fits all. They work hard to understand the impact of each emergency and the need this creates within individual communities. The equipment they provide, whatever shape it takes, gives people the hope and the power to transform their own lives. They test and evaluate all the aid they provide by talking to, and learning from, the families who use it. This fuels them to be innovative and to continue evolving.

The Rotary Vote of thanks was given by Brian Johnson
