AQUABOX, by John Brown, Kilsyth RC – Aquabox officer for District 1020.
Aquabox has been going for 20 years and we all felt we knew something about it. But after seeing John’s film and slide show and hearing his talk, we all now feel that the sheer simplicity and effectiveness of the Aquabox filtration system truly makes it a significant life-saving project – in both emergency and dirty water situations.
John’s practical demonstration say filthy water transformed to drinking quality, with a reverse action clearing out the filters so that a clean operation could be repeated. One litre per minute can be produced by hand action, so no electricity is involved - truly a low technology solution. Filters are known to be effective operationally for more than 6 years. Both Jim and President Rodger sampled and admired the quality of drinking water produced.
For 20 years the Wirksworth RC has put together quite a large team (70) of both Rotarians and others to put together the components of the micro bore filter unit and to ship it worldwide. The filters clean out all water borne diseases and bacteria, including significantly the polio virus with which Rotary worldwide is involved in eradicating.
The Family Unit costs £150, the Community Unit £250, all within an Aquabox which includes tools and education items. The filter unit itself can now also be purchased by the dozen – the “Aqua 12” at £300 - and in providing clean water no plastic bottle pollution is involved. In all, 95,000 boxes have been sent out and the hope is to double output over the next 5 years, perhaps supported by institutional charity funding.
Jim West thanked John for his inspiring talk.
