District Quiz vs Ulverston

Tue 16th October 2018 at 19.00 - 21.00

Furness and Ulverston battle it out for a place in the next round.

Each year Rotary clubs in Cumbria and Lancashire are invited to take part in a quiz of ten rounds covering a variety of subjects. This year we drew Ulverson at home and they proved to be tough opposition.

Our team of Brian Boyd, Graham Dixon, Fred Winkfield and Gordon Turner acquitted themselves extremely well in the face of some tough questions, set by last year’s winners North Fylde. In the relatively safe seat of timekeeper, Ron found it difficult to understand some of the questions, let alone coming up with the answers!

Ulverston have always been tough opponents in the quiz, and they had a clean sweep in the History round but we bounced back in the Sports round, thrashing the visitors by 11 points to nil. However it wasn’t enough to prevent Ulverston going home with an empathic victory of 84 points to 49.

The questions were asked by last year’s Mayor of Barrow, Tony Callister, and both teams enjoyed Rotary fellowship and a very tasty buffet from Peter and his team at The Chetwynde Hotel.

As this was only the first round of this year’s District Quiz, our intrepid team consoled themselves the thought that the next round may have taken them many miles to the likes of Whitehaven, or worse still, Silloth. Nothing against those clubs or towns, apart from them being miles away from Barrow. But then again everywhere is, isn't it?
