Thu, Nov 22nd 2018 at 12:55 pm - 1:55 pm

On Thursday 22nd November 2018 President Anne Sampson welcomed 22 Club Rotarians

to this lunch time meeting which was held at the Gilvenbank Hotel, Glenrothes.

There were 3 apologies for absence,

On reception, this week were Chris Grist who said grace and Peter May,

President Anne Sampson had attended the District meeting last Wednesday where she had been informed that a tree planting would be taking place at Kelty over the Pilgrims Way route on 30th November 2018 and help was being requested.

Tracy Thomson had collected the shoeboxes from the schools and took them to Perth today for onward transmission to Eastern Europe for Christmas.

Brian Johnson confirmed that we will be able to display the shelter box in the Glenrothes Town Centre on the weekend of 15th February 2019.

Wilna Roger advised that the Young Chef of the Year competition organised by Lead Rotarian Archie Lawrie took place at Auchmuty High School today with Jaan Yilmaz now working at Balbirnie Hotel and a previous winner of our Young Chef of the Year judging the competition along with Lars Christiansen and Jennifer Watt.

Lindsay Roy mentioned that the Mentoring Process at Auchmuty High School was going well.

Our speaker this week was our own Walter Fletcher who gave us older ones a trip down memory lane as he spoke about his upbringing in Dundee during the 2nd World War where he mentioned about attending Morgan Academy Primary School at the age of 5 and having to walk a mile and a half by himself. He spoke about the bombs being dropped in Dundee on 2nd August 1940 where the Germans seemed to be targeting the Tay Rail bridge. It was also a strategic area being used for Submarines. Dundee had been a submarine base just before the First World War, though the submarines were withdrawn once the new naval base at Rosyth was completed in 1912. But as war clouds gathered again in late summer 1939, and the Royal Navy moved to its war stations, Britain's most modern and powerful submarine flotilla in Home Waters, the 2nd Flotilla, arrived in Dundee. Food rationing came to an end on the 4th July 1954.When Walter left school, he trained to become a CA being paid £5 a month for 5 years. He joined Tullis Russell in 1966 where he eventually became a director in 1980.

The Rotary Vote of thanks was given by Ewen Macdonald
