Evening meeting - Halloween evening

Thu, Oct 25th 2018 at 6:30 pm - 9:55 pm

On Thursday 25th October 2018 President Anne Sampson welcomed 13 Club Rotarians and 4 guests Maureen Lawrie, Andrew Roger. Jean Traynor and Janice MacPhail to this Halloween evening meeting which was held at the Gilvenbank Hotel, Glenrothes.

On reception, this week was  Bill Wooton and Jack Dempsey.

As Halloween draws near our meeting was filled with fun as we heard two spooky talks from our own Archie Lawrie one of which was his first encounter with the paranormal, he says, was when he was a young man of 19 working in the RAF’s radar servicing team during his two years of national service. "I had an incident on a train journey," "It was December and there was no heating. There was a blind man on the train who was absolutely freezing, so I gave him my gloves. He told my fortune and the fortune of a fellow airman with me. "He told me that I was to lose my right arm below the elbow and I thought ‘this is madness’. But then I discovered that the person who was standing in for me while I was away from my post lost his lower arm shortly afterwards in the machinery we used.
We also had dookin' for apples, some Rotarians and guests in fancy dress and a quiz on Halloween which just showed up what little we all knew about Halloween and a raffle with the proceeds going to the Glenrothes Foodbank.

At Balgeddie Hotel on Friday 26th October at our Past Presidents dinner our President Anne Sampson prepared the Rotarians and guests for a wonderful evening as she said about Lindsay Roy, Our immediate past President, what can you say about Lindsay that Prime Ministers of this country have not said already.
One of the most respected people we possibly have had the pleasure of being in the company with being honoured with an MBE for services to Education and he was also President of our Club.
Yes a very committed man gaining so much respect in Education, so much so he was head hunted by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to get into local politics and became an MP for this area and then he joined us in Glenrothes.
Whilst mentioning this we must not forget behind every good man is a great woman - thanks Irene you were certainly very supportive of Lindsay during his year as our President and I dare say over the years of your marriage, a lot to put up with what with all his sporting activities, schooling, Parliamentary issues and I dare say you could add to the list.
He overcame having had a hip operation, knee operation and he still battles on with his walking and cycling.
Lindsay had a great year as our President getting involved and supporting everything including the Foodbank, men’s shed, Auchmuty Learning Centre and now the intergenerational project and we are very proud that he led us so well last year. What a great night we had great fellowship, with a wonderful meal and great service by the staff at the hotel.

The Annual club 'Presidents' golf trophy was played for at Thornton golf club last Monday 22nd October 2018, the weather a bit windy but the course and the greens in fantastic condition. Steve Grist had the best guests stapleford score with Will Wishart picking up the trophy with the best Rotarians score. Many thanks to Greenside Catering for an excellent meal and great service. Many thanks to the golf club for excellent hospitality and warm welcome.
