Rob's Monthly newsletter for August

Here is the presidential for the month from Rob

Rob Soutar

The month has flown by. Five Mondays in July. At our first lunch meeting we had an interesting talk by Nigel Warwick on his ‘Blood Bikers’. Another of these great voluntary activities that you did not know about, ferrying urgent supplies for the NHS.

At our second lunch meeting we had a visit from Joan Goldsmith, our new District Governor, and her husband. (He an old work mate of Mike).

Two evening talks. Liz Russell told us about the Parish of St. John’s that is no longer in existence. Founded in the 12th century and dissolved in 2012, it served the people who lived in the old centre of Hereford.  It never had its own church, but its own altar located in the cathedral.

Nick Wood, the manager of the BT station at Madley, explained how they transmit millions of messages every minute around the globe. Members were fascinated by his explanation of how our phone calls and searches of the net are chopped up and funnelled into the fibre optic cables. Most people realised that their knowledge of physics was a bit basic. We may need to consider getting Derek D to give us some tuition!

Finally last night, 22 of us played boule at Clehonger. If you were not there you missed a fun night. If you were, you suspect that one husband may be due for a talking-to about appropriate comments to his wife. But perhaps not!

Charity lunch at Alan and Val Blakes’ this Saturday in aid of SHYPP and              End Polio Now.  Katie, Alan and their team have put a lot of effort in so please come (new names to Paul please). Steak on the bbq, salads and pudding. Raffle. Bar. £12 per head. From 1230. Guests welcome – last night there were still 10 places free.

Looking forward, our next meeting is at lunch on 6th. We will make this ‘Rotary Affairs’ to follow up upon the Council meeting last week. We have a speaker on Waste Management on the 13th and the lunch meeting on 20th will revert to ‘Fellowship’ (No one has responded to my thoughts on this word. Could we say ‘Social’ on our programmes?)

Kevin has cancelled the away meal scheduled for the 17th as too many of the usual participants are away. Please put 20th September in your diaries. Kevin would like venue ideas. I know he has Madeleines on his radar.

Remember the Car Treasure Hunt/ Auction/ BBQ is on Saturday 25th August (not Sunday as in the programme). Details of start etc will come from John but afterwards is at Colin and Shirleys’
