Bruce is a surveyor and environmentalist by profession and has published his book reviewing and documenting Scotland’s bridge heritage, entitled BRIDGESCAPES.
Tonight he gave a whirlwind tour of some bridges form his publication. He quoted John Buchan “that bridges are a symbol of mans conquest over nature”.
Scotland has had a long and distinguished history of bridge builders and bridge building some of which are:
Skye; Balgownie; Craigellachie; Union Chain bridge; Ballochmile; Dunkeld; Avon Aqueduct; Glenfinnan Viaduct; Erskine; Kessock; Tay, Forth, Queesnsferry Crossing ; to name a few.
Scotland has an enviable history in bridge building, many bridges having set records (longest /highest/engineering innovation).
He also talked about Scotland’s bridge builders including Thomas Telford who he described as the Colossus Maximus.
He then opened the meeting to questions.
Alan Young concluded the excellent talk with the clubs vote of thanks.
