Donations to Community Groups

Community committee chair, Stuart Earl, introduced Glenys Cornwell from the Crowhurst Playgroup and Sam Burt from the Battle based Westerleigh Judo Club at the meeting on 29thAugust. Both of the organisations were in need of funds and the club had agreed to make a donation to each.

Sam Burt has been volunteering at the Westerleigh Judo Club for thirteen years and also cares three disabled adults at home. The cub, solely run by volunteers, is an all-inclusive club teaching judo to disabled persons including those who are blind and those who have cerebral palsy. The members compete at various competitions including the Special Olympics where they achieved a number of medals including gold. They also compete regularly in Holland. Three years ago the club bought a coach to transport the competitors and the money donated by Senlac Rotary will help with both the transport cost and to assist those competitors who struggle to meet the cost of attending the meets.

Glenys Cornwell is a volunteer at the Crowhurst Play Group which has been in existence for 45 years and is one of the longest running in the area. The group originally met in the village hall and extended to the scout hall but the hours they could provide were limited. The introduction of 30 hours free childcare meant the group could not run for sufficient hours to meet the new needs which resulted in a number of children leaving and the group was in danger of folding. They have now found accommodation in the village youth club where they can provide the hours and the numbers cared for are now rising. The problem has been storage; only some equipment could be stored in the youth club; the rest was at the other end of the village. The donation will help buy more cupboards and all their equipment will be stored on site for the benefit of the children.
