Bobby Cairns: Gerald Graham - Hawick & the Antiques Road Show

Thu, Aug 9th 2018 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Weekly meeting with guest speaker, who recounts his experience on appearing recently on BBC's Antiques Road Show

Past President Bobby Cairns introduced the speaker at last Thursday evening's meeting of the Rotary Club when Gerry Graham revealed the mysteries of the popular BBC programme "Antiques Roadshow" in which he had recently taken part.  Gerry worked in local hosiery factory James Renwick until it closed in 1992.  The factory was cleared to make way for residential apartments and Gerry was dismayed at how much historical material and artefacts was being discarded and retrieved a large sample book from about 1930 which displayed samples and patterns on a monumental scale.  He thought it might be of a wider interest to students of hosiery and, when he saw that the Antiques Roadshow was coming to Floors Castle at Kelso, he contacted them to see if the book would be of interest.  He sent off pictures and the producers of the programme contacted him.  Further interviews and viewings took place and on 6th July, 2017 he was interviewed, after having been made-up for the cameras, for about 45 minutes.  On 18th February, 2018 the recording of the clip was shown on the programme - all three and half minutes of it!  Gerry found it a most interesting experience and his excellent talk generated many questions.  Gerry said that the book, which was valued at about £400, will likely eventually be included in the local museum archives for the benefit of students of the hosiery industry and he was warmly thanked by the President Mairhi Trickett for an enlightening evening.
