Weekly Club Meeting

Fri, Jul 27th 2018 at 12:45 pm - 2:00 pm

Speaker: Andy Nicholson "Discovery of the Galloway Hoard"

Club members please log in for more information.

Andrew is the Archaeologist for Dumfries and Galloway Council.
He started in archaeology whilst still at school, spending his summer holidays excavating Roman sites in the Cotswolds and West Midlands, and medieval sites in County Durham.
He graduated from Birmingham University, having focussed on British archaeology and fieldwork, and went straight to work for the North-East of England Field Archaeology Unit. From there he moved to Bristol Museums, before coming up to Galloway to work on the Whithorn Dig in 1986 ‘for a six week break’!
After six years digging at Whithorn he set up Wigtownshire Archaeological Associates, undertaking commercial fieldwork and contributing extensively to Peter Hill’s publication of the Whithorn excavations.
In 1999 he started work at the Council, developing their Historic Environment Record for the next fifteen years, before taking on the archaeologist role.
His specialist area of interest is the early medieval period in the Irish Sea zone, so he was delighted to be the only archaeologist immediately available to excavate the Galloway Viking Hoard in 2014.
