Topic :- Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland

Rotary club of Stirling meeting of 14th April 2019.

VP Ranald Ross-Watt welcomed two visitors, our speaker Kirsteen Plop, and her colleague Lucy Kinnon. Ranald reminded us that the club assembly will now be on 20th June, and the hand over to the new president on 5th

July. The new president's at home will be on Saturday 13th July.

Treasurer Edmond Mansion intimated two recent donations, two Shelter Boxes for the East African flood disaster, and £250 to Forth Valley Disability Sport.

We are all familiar with the Scottish Chest Heart and Stroke association, but our speaker, events officer Kirsteen Plop showed us clearly what an important roll it has, and how great is the range of its activities. Every day in Scotland 20 patients will have a stroke,

36 a heart attack, and 46 develop heart failure, all if not fatal, possibly leading to a limited life. The organisation's aim is that no life will be half led, and that all will have the best possible life after the event. To this end the organisation's activities are people driven, meeting unmet needs, but must also be funded, and its activities effective and accountable. Its practitioners operate at hospital and community level, helping with rehabilitation, and providing an accessible help and advice line. The shops are well known and as well as raising money from the sale of second hand items, they also act as a local point of contact proving advice and services, especially through its specialist support nurses working in the community. Although it does receive government funding, most of its income comes from charitable giving. About 15% is spent on prevention, 25% on survival, helping people to recognise important symptoms, and 60% on ongoing support in the community. The level of interest was shown by the large number of questions, all answered very fully.

Next week 19th April will be a fellowship meeting, Visitor's host Allister Morrison.
