Suano with President Rodger

Suano with President Rodger

Our speaker was Suano Wado from Japan, who is studying at the University of Edinburgh as a Master student of Translation Studies.  She is sponsored by a local Rotary Club in her home town, Niigata City, D 2560, which gave her a role as an ambassador to introduce Japanese culture to Rotary Clubs here.
Suano gave us an overview of important areas of Japanese culture including;
Festivals, Temples, Religion, Food, Weaving and dyeing, Sumo, Samuri, Tea ceremonies and Agriculture – thinking Japan producing Saki was the ‘twin’ of Scotland producing Whisky (I don’t know cause I don’t like either!). She spoke of the power of ‘pickled plums’ to cure food poisoning and the influences of China and Asia on the Japanese culture.  The thing she was missing most about her home was the Japanese hot spring bath! However her course ends in August when she is returning to Japan.

VOT was given by Ken Lindsay - and then everyone rushed home to see the football
