We met at John Franklins, adjacent to the Derngate and Royal theatre complex, for a (big) bite to eat. of cheeses and cold meats. The plan was to move on to The Collective maulebrewing.com/maule-collective-bar. Dominic had both emailed and rung them beforehand to check they would be open - they weren't! Nor was Foodies a bit further down Derngate, so we poppped in to the Mailcoach which had live music, and no one tending the bar, so we gave it a miss, hopped into my car (there were only four of us), and headed for the Malt Shovel, which has long been a personal favourite for its choice of beers and character. The welcome was as friendly as ever, but the four of us outnumbered the staff.
We had a few 'sherbets' and headed for home c. 10pm, having had a good natter and put the world to rights.
