Foundation Convenor's Report on 2017-18.

Gus describes the wide range of charitable and other activities undertaken during 2017-18

This Rotary year, the Foundation Committee agreed to commit our funds raised over the year to supporting the Selkirk Club in their successful Philippines project that we heard so much about last week and also to continue supporting the End Polio campaign.

The weekly Bonus Ball Fundraiser has again continued this year and we agreed to use the funds raised up to the beginning of December for End Polio and funds raised thereafter to go towards the Philippines project.

According to my records from the Bonus Ball draws, up to the beginning of December, just under £230 had been raised for End Polio and up to the end April, about £205 for the Philippines project, both these amounts are after distribution of prize money.

Our Committee were responsible this year for running the Quiz Night in February and, after expenses, approximately £242 was raised to also go towards the Club’s total contribution to the Philippines Project.

It was clearly evident from last week’s excellent presentation that the money given to the Selkirk club has been very well spent!

In addition to the Quiz Night fundraiser, the Foundation Committee also ran a prize draw for a specially commissioned print of the Queensferry Crossing with proceeds from the draw of about £330 also going to End Polio.

Again, this year, we were delighted to see the Club supporting the “Purple4Polio” initiative with yet more purple crocus bulbs planted at Weensland. Thanks to Kerr for organising this and to Ron Smith for arranging the signs at both Weensland and Galalaw.

In total this Rotary year, the Foundation Committee have been responsible for raising approximately £1,060.00 - £560 for End Polio and £477 for the Philippines project (rounded up by the Club to £500).

The fight to End Polio continues. We are even closer to eradicating a human disease for only the second time in history.

The global public-private partnership has reduced the poliovirus caseload by 99.9% over the last 30 years, but there’s still plenty of work to do.

Finally my thanks go to my Committee and to Club Members for your continued support towards our End Polio efforts and for supporting the Philippines project this Rotary year.

Angus Neilson.
